Here are my ideas for Identifying magical Items. It is based on this article (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sg/20051125a).
Rules:
You can use Spellcraft to identify magic items.
It takes one round to identify a potion. It takes a full minute to identify other magic items. You cannot take 10 or take 20.
Scrolls: DC per book
Potions: DC 25
Arms and Armor: DC 30
Wands: DC 30
Rods: DC 35
Rings: DC 40
Staffs DC 40
Wondrous Items:
-Minor: DC 25
-Medium: DC 30
-Major: DC 40
Cursed or items with penalties: +10 DC
If an item has mutliple powers I may create a 'ladder' type system. Say a +1 dagger with flaming could be DC 25 for the +1 and DC 30 for the flaming. If you roll a 27 you learn it is +1, but not that it is flaming. An alternate idea is to roll for each 'power' that an item has. If an item is particularly powerful I may increase the difficulty by +1 to +5. As with some skills I will probably have you tell me your bonus and I will roll.
Using the identify spell gives you +20 to identify one item. Analyse Dweomer gives you +20 on each item during it's duration.
Having the relevant item creation feat gives you +2 to your roll.
An appropriate lab or tools will give a +1-5 bonus.
Taking additonal time will give you a bonus from +1-5.
Bardic Knowledge (or a similar class skill) gives you a bonus equal to your level.
You can also use Alchemy to identify potions or alchemical items.
Common alchemical items are DC 20
Uncommon alchemical items are DC 25
Potions are DC 30
If a wondrous item may be an alchemical item then you can use alchemy to identify it with a +5 DC penalty.
You can get a feat and use the Appraise skill
Appraise Magic [General]
You are skilled at evaluating magic items and discovering their secrets.
Prerequisite: Appraise 3 ranks.
Benefit: You can use the Appraise skill in place of the Spellcraft skill to identify magic items. Appraise is always a class skill for you.
