The city of the White Wolf (color map) (b&w map)
Legend of the City's founding by Ulric
Capitol city of Volkrad
Build on a Spire of rock know as the Fauschlag (Fist-Strike) that originally had a flat stump top about a mile across, the city now is bursting at he edges.
There are 6 official entry ways into the city, 4 enourmous viaducts wind their way up to the 4 gates. The viaducts are 20' wide, wide enough for 2 large carts to pass each other easily, but since the walls are only 3' and the drop is dizzying, which cart gets to ride in the middle is often a reason for argument. Tolls are generally 1pg per foot. There are also 2 chairlifts on the SE and NW sides of the city that are a breath-taking way to enter the city. Prices range from 5cp to 1gp depending on weight.
Its ruled by the Graf, a heriditary position held by the Todbringer family. Other powerful figures in the city include the High Priest of Ulric, The Knight Eternal, Head of the Wizards and ALchamist Guild, Law Lords, Midden Marshals, Komission Convenor , the heards of the Public Komissions, and the Guild Leaders.
Buit as an extremly fortified and military city, Middenheim has begun to grow plump and rich. The walls arn't patrolled as much as they should be, Gate guards with gold in their eyes will let pretty much anyone through, and corruption in the lower courts is rampant. The Knights Panthar (Graf's personal guard) maintain diligent.
The Fauschlag rock that Middenheim is built on is riddled with caves and tunnels. When founded, Dwarves were hired to tunnel up through the rock to get to the top. As they went they dug, side tunnels, shafts, storage halls, etc. Supposedly after a great seige hundreds of years ago the lower tunnels were sealed off for all time. However rumer says some were left deliberatly open by the dwarves, and others have since been opened by others.
The base of the Fauschlag is kept in shadow most of the time, from the rock itself, the enourmous viaducts, and the forests. Just NE of the city is the slum town of Warrenburg. West a few miles is Volstyr lake, across which is the border lands. To the south along the road are small farms, ecking out a living in the mountain pass.
